Storm Drain Cleaning
Storm Drain Collection System Cleaning
Storm drains are designed and installed to eliminate rain water caused flooding. Storm drains do not carry rainwater to a treatment plant, but channel water to creeks, streams, rivers or oceans. This direct method to remove untreated rainwater is successful but does have some limitations.
Catch Basin Maintenance Reduces Environmental Pollution
Storm drain catch basins or manholes have a collection sump located below the inverts of inlet and outlet pipes. The sump is designed to collect heavier-than-water debris and dirt. Collection of debris material in the sumps prevents debris material from collecting in pipes thus reducing flow capacity and preventing debris from reaching outflow areas such as streams rivers or oceans.
Cleaning of storm drain catch basins should be performed on a regular scheduled basis to maintain flow capacity and prevent ecosystem pollution.
JTV, Inc. has combination sewer cleaning trucks, units with both a high pressure jetting system to clean pipes and a powerful vacuum cleaning system attached to a large debris collection tank for cleaning storm drain basins. The vacuum system is used with a 8" diameter suction hose suspended and moved by a hydraulic boom. Operators vacuum clean the catch basin using vacuum and a high pressure water spray to breakup and loosen debris. All debris removed from storm drain collection systems is properly disposed of at regional landfills.
When the catch basin sump is clean of debris, operators visually check the inlet an outlet pipes for the presence of dirt or debris. If waste material is found in a pipe, then the pipes are cleaned using high pressure water jetting and the recovered debris vacuum removed for disposal.
Storm Drain Pollution Awareness
Public awareness of storm drain contribution to local waterways has dramatically increased in recent years. Many communities have sponsored storm drain pollution campaigns to inform the public about the problems. Campaigns to label storm drain basins with warnings about improper disposal of garbage & debris. Public works employees and volunteers spend many hours labeling storm drain manholes with proper warnings.
